This will be the last Scalzi book I read. I cant begin to describe my disappointment in Jane effortlessly making life and death decisions at the end of the book.*Spoiler**Spoiler**Spoiler**Spoiler**Spoiler**Spoiler**Spoiler**Spoiler*How could she get both choices so completely wrong.
For all of Old Man's War flaws it was sufficiently action packed and entertaining for the reader to forgive. This book is a true let down.
Its the fact that in a book that is structured around the importance of making the correct choice, the characters seem to make so many poor ones and never suffer any conscience. This book is neither action packed or entertaining (I can recall only two combat scenes in the whole book)But what really destroys this book, is not the awful roll your eyes sarcasm, or the nerdy jokes about sci-fi books, the twenty person orgies, or the red hot jarred.
Its not even the hollowness of the returning characters that seem unable to do anything besides shrug and open their mouths but be interrupted before they can speak. Neither Jarred or Cainen really wanted to be dead but both were backed into a corner, it was just an easy way to end the book.

Very good story. Fast paced and very entertaining.Doesn't need to be a sequel. Has all the references for reader to understand the context.
I say "sequel" because you don't really need to read Old Man's War first to enjoy this one, although it might help you get into the universe quicker. Dick. I didn't think anything could live up to the greatness that was OMW but I was pleasantly surprised. I really liked the existential themes that were present in this book, it reminded me a lot of Philip K. I'm tempted to say that I like this book more than OMW but I think the humor in OMW makes that one slightly more enjoyable. Scalzi has really surprised me with how great this series is and I can't wait to pick up the rest.
While it was moderately entertaining his description of consciousness was ultimately so bothersome that it ruined the book.
I so enjoyed "Old Man's War" that I couldn't wait to get the second installment. Although it was good, it wasn't nearly as good as the first one.I definitely recommend it as I loved the first book and have almost finished the third which I am loving, too.Get it.
